Another "loan shark" joined the Southern Kings

Another “loan shark” will make Nelson Mandela Bay his home when he joins the Southern Kings for the remainder of the Super Rugby season. Outside back, Wandile Mjekevu will join a number of Sharks team mates already on loan to the Southern Kings in the hope of boosting the Eastern Cape franchise.

Southern Kings Chief Operating Officer, Charl Crous said Mjekevu, who had been based at the Cell C Sharks, had been released this week to assist the Southern Kings, who have been battling with a number of injuries to their backline.

The Southern Kings have already lost the services of Malcolm Jaer, Siyanda Grey, Charles Radebe, Stefan Watermeyer and most recently Luzuku Vulindlu (also a former Sharks player) and Elgar Watts.

“We have negotiated with the Sharks to loan Mjekevu to the Southern Kings for the remainder of the season and have followed all the necessary requirements to record the changes with SANZAAR,” said Crous.

Mjekevu represented South Africa at the IRB World Junior Championships in 2010 and 2011. He played most of his junior rugby at the Golden Lions before making his senior debut for the Sharks in 2012.

In 2013 he joined French club Perpignan where he made a number of appearances in the Top 14 and Heineken Cup before returning to Durban in 2015.

Mjekevu has already joined the Southern Kings training sessions yesterday and will be available for their next Super Rugby match against the Jaguares at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Friday evening.
