Kings underprepared for Cavaliers

The EP Kings had their first taste of Currie Cup rugby when they faced the Boland Cavaliers at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth yesterday evening.

The visitors won comfortably in the end as they scored four tries to one against a Kings side that was basically put together in less than a week's time.

The home side failed to take an early lead after flyhalf Kobus Marais missed a penalty after eight minutes. Boland took advantage of the extra player after Kings lock Tazz Fuzani were yellow carded for a dangerous tackle at the end of the first quarter. Right wing Sergio Torres crossed the line for their first try as they took a 7 point lead after a successful conversion from Nico Scheepers.

It was third time lucky for Marais as he slotted a penalty kick to put the Kings on the board with four minutes to half time. Kings trailed by four as the teams went into the break, 3 - 7.

Boland scored a further three tries, the first through eighthman, Zandre Jordaan, followed by Christopher Bosch and Kenan Cronje after yet another Kings player was yellow carded for a dangerous tackle in the air. Scheepers added the extras as the visitors took a demanding 3 - 28 lead with ten minutes remaining.

The Kings scored a consolation try through outside centre Johann Tromp. Replacement Lungelo Gosa added the extras as the match eventually ended 10 - 28 to Boland.

Scorers:

EP Kings (3) 10 - Try: Johann Tromp. Conversion: Lungelo Gosa. Penalty: Kobus Marais.

Boland Cavaliers (7) 28 - Tries: Sergio Torrens, Zandre Jordaan, Christopher Bosch, Kenan Cronje. Conversions: Nico Scheepers (4).
