Open Letter to Cheeky Watson
I sent an open letter to the Union on the 30 May 2015 representing supporters on our pages, highlighting our concerns; we were not being ready for Currie Cup, and not building for Super Rugby 2016. We made it clear that this was not a witch-hunt against Cheeky Watson but rather we had serious concerns that it appeared there was no plan in place to ensure we were ready for 2016. Our letter spoke to; the ongoing sponsor saga, lack of coaching structures, the urgent need to add to our player pool, improve communication and refrain from using the word “immanent” which was frankly comical.

Disappointment for EP Academy side
Fresh from their 34 - 29 win against Border, the Eastern Province Academy side faced a strong Western Province side in their second match at the Isak Steyl Stadium in Vanderbijlpark.
Western Province restricted the EP boys to just three points in the first half, as they took a comfortable 15 - 3 lead at the break.
The boys from Port Elizabeth managed to add two tries in the second half, while Western Province added a further thirty eight points to finish the game 53 - 17.
Eastern Province will face the Pumas in their final match on Thursday. The game will be played on the B Field and kick-off is at 12:45pm.
EP U16s too strong for Falcons
Eastern Province recorded their first win at the Under-16 Coca-Cola Grant Khomo Week when they beat the Falcons on Tuesday.
The boys from Port Elizabeth suffered an 11 - 24 loss in their opener against KwaZulu-Natal, but made amends today when they scored five tries to beat the boys from Kempton Park on the second day at the Bridgton Sports Grounds in Oudtshoorn.
The first half was exciting as both teams tried hard to make their presence felt. Eastern Province had the first say with two tries in the first seventeen minutes, which they converted to take a 14-0 lead. The Valke hit back five minutes later with a converted try of their own to reduce the deficit to 14-7, which they held onto for the rest of the half.
The Valke came out strong in the second half as they burst through for their second try, but this was cancelled out by Eastern Province as they added another try minutes later. The Valke again hit back, but two tries by Eastern Province in the last four minutes pushed them into a convincing lead to finish the match 35 - 17.
Scorers:
Eastern Province (14) 35 – Tries: Elandre Smit, Chrispian Jaggers, Le-Kleu Stokes, Ayabonga Matroos, Waqar Solaan. Conversions: Vaughn Isaacs (5).
Falcons (7) 17 - Tries: Ruben Beytell, Quan Eymann, Lee-Irwin Andries. Conversions: Ruben Beytell.

Bulls u13s too strong for EP in final match
Eastern Province faced tough opposition in their final match at the Under-13 Coca-Cola Craven Week, when they played the Itec Blue Bulls at Hoërskool Rob Ferreira in White River on Friday morning.
The boys from Pretoria outscored the Port Elizabeth based side in the first half by four tries to one.
The Blue Bulls dominated up-front and showing an impressive attacking prowess out wide. The Blue Bulls’ attack was fantastic as they forced EP onto the back-foot and the rewards followed as they crossed the tryline four times in the first half.
Eastern Province did their best to force their way into the match, but their efforts were curtailed by the effective Blue Bulls defence, leaving them to settle for only one converted try in the first half and a 21 point deficit at the break.
Eastern Province tightened up their defence significantly in the second half as they limited the Blue Bulls to only one more try. The Port Elizabeth side managed to score a second try, as the game ended 35 - 14 in favour of the Blue Bulls.

EP U13s secure convincing win
Eastern Province secured a convincing win in their penultimate round of fixtures at the Under-13 Coca-Cola Craven Week, when they beat the Limpopo Blue Bulls at Hoërskool Rob Ferreira in White River on Thursday.
Eastern Province did well to capitalise on their try-scoring chances against the Limpopo Blue Bulls despite both teams showing their attacking prowess in a hard-running first half.
Eastern Province backed up their exciting attack with a solid defensive structure, which, combined with mistakes at crucial times by the Limpopo side, only allowed them to cross the tryline once in the first half.
Eastern Province’s three first half tries allowed them to take a comfortable 19 – 7 lead at the break.
They picked up where they left off in the second half and scored a further two tries, thanks to their impressive support play and hard running, which allowed them to continue finding the gaps in the defence.
The Limpopo Blue Bulls bounced back strongly in the dying minutes to score a consolation try as the game ended 31 – 12 in favour of the Port Elizabeth side.
Scorers:
Eastern Province (19) 31 – Tries: Ethan Liberty, Kuhle Desha, Aliswa Mapuma, Larquin Goliath, Siviwe Zondani. Conversions: Daniel Smith (2), Lathita Nqebe.

Convincing win to end disappointing campaign
In retrospect the convincing 23 – 8 victory came somewhat a day too late and a few log points short as they ended fifth on the South Section log, three log points behind the forth played SWD Eagles.
Dispite the score being 8 all at the break, the Kings added a further two tries and a penalty in the second half to score 15 unanswered points.
The Kings were first to put points on the board through a Hansie Graaff penalty, after they set up camp in the Sharks’ 22 during the opening minutes.

Watson to lead Kings against Sharks
The Eastern Province Kings have made slight changes to their side which thrashed Boland 44 - 10, as they are set to face the Sharks XV in their last Vodacom Cup match at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Friday night.
The Kings who are fifth on the South Section log scored 25 unanswered points against the Cavaliers in the second half after they led 19 - 10 at the break. The Sharks who are sixth on the log, might just go into this game as the "underdogs" as they went down 24 - 27 to Griquas in their penultimate match of this year's competition.
In the backline, Siyanda Grey moves from outside centre to right wing as he replaces Sphu Msutwana who moves to the bench. Former Sharks centre, Tim Whitehead replaces Ronnie Cooke at inside centre, as Cooke shiftes to outside to replace Grey.
Amongst the loose forwards, Tim Agaba replaces Aidon Davis at eighthman and Luke Watson who returns as captain replaces Eital Bredenkamp on the flank.
Kick-off is at 7pm.

Rugby stands together against Xenophobia
The president of the South African Rugby Union (SARU) has called on the sport to mobilise in support of the campaign to end xenophobic attacks on foreign residents.
Mr Oregan Hoskins threw the weight of the sport into the public opposition to the outbreak of attacks in KwaZulu-Natal and Johannesburg that have shocked South Africa and the global community.
“Rugby shares the horror and dismay that has greeted these horrific attacks on people whose only aim is to make a better life for themselves and their families in a country that is supposed to be a watchword for tolerance and freedom,” said Mr Hoskins.
“Rugby is not a political organisation, and we cannot solve these problems, but we can add our voice to the rest of civic South Africa who are appalled at the violence and lack of humanity that these attacks have betrayed. “I would call on all those involved in rugby to make a stand in whatever small way they can to demonstrate that we abhor both the sentiment and the actions that have generated these disgraceful and shaming actions.”
Mr Hoskins said that he was discussing plans to make a more public statement from the sport over the coming days.
He said: “We join others in asking: is this the legacy that Nelson Mandela and so many others fought for in the struggle? Is this how we repay our African brothers who supported us in the fight for our own freedom? “The criminals and opportunists responsible for the violence and for fermenting intolerance have dragged the name of South Africa through the mud. We support the Government’s efforts to root them out and demonstrate that xenophobia has no home in South Africa.”
National captain Jean de Villiers added the voice of the Springboks to the president’s call.
“As international sportsmen we meet and play with and against people of many different nationalities,” said De Villiers. “It is a privilege that has enriched my life and that of all Springbok rugby players and this shocking outbreak is definitely not what Springbok rugby or we as South Africans represent. “I would add to the president’s call by asking everyone involved in rugby to add their voice to the opposition to these actions by it with a Tweet using the hashtag #sportagainstxenophobia, by positing to their Facebook page or just in conversation with everyone with whom they come into contact. We have to make it clear that these actions are not what South Africans stand for.”
Mr Hoskins added that he trusted that the national outpouring of outrage against the attacks would lead to an immediate end to the violence and tension.

Province keep top spot after beating Kings
The DHL Western Province kept their unbeaten record intact when they faced the Eastern Province Kings in a round 5 Vodacom Cup match at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Saturday evening.
The home team outscored the visitors from Cape Town two tries to one, but a lack of discipline in the first half allowed Western Province to kick four penalties as they took a 12 - 5 lead at half time.
Province's flyhalf Jean-Luc du Plessis opened the scoring when he kicked a penalty in the 5th minute to give his team a 3 point lead.
The Kings suffered at the break down as a lack of players caused a number of turnovers early on. Dispite dominating at scrum time the Kings were battling at the lineouts losing out on scoring opportunities.
Du Plessis stretched Province's lead to 6 when he kicked his team's second penalty in the 30th minute.
Five minutes later Kings scored their first try through flyhalf George Whitehead, after continuous pressure on Province's try line. Whitehead missed the extras as they trailed 5 - 6 with five minutes to half time.
Province stretched their lead to four points as du Plessis kicked another penalty a minute from half time, taking a 9 - 5 lead.
Numerous warnings from the referee resulted in a yellow card as Kings hooker, Martin Ferreira, was sin binned on half time. Du Plessis kicked his fourth penalty as Province took a 12 - 5 lead at half time.
Replacement Scott van Breda kicked the Kings' second penalty ten minutes into the second half, as they trailed 8 - 12 on the 50th minute.
The Kings took the lead for the first time after a chip kick from Hansie Graaff was gathered by fullback Sylvian Mahuza, the conversion was missed by van Breda as they took a 13 - 12 lead with a quarter of the game remaining.
Province piled on the pressure as the game reached the final stages and eventually regained the lead after they camped on the Kings' try line. Scrumhalf Godlen Masimla stepped his way over the try line for their first points in the second half. Du Plessis was on target as he added the extras to give Province a 19 - 13 lead with ten minutes to play.
The Kings had one last opportunity in the dying seconds as they gained precious meters deep inside Province's twenty two. Graaff tried to put the ball behind the Province defense but rolled into the in-goal as the ball was dotted down after the final hooter.
The game ended 19 - 13 as Province keep their unbeaten record and the top spot in the South Section.
Scorers:
EP Kings: (5) 13 - Tries George Whitehead, Sylvian Mahuza. Penalty Scott van Breda.
DHL Western Province: (12) 19 - Tries: Godlen Masimla. Conversion: Jean-Luc du Plessis. Penalties Jean-Luc Plessis (4).

Bonus point win for Kings
The Eastern Province Kings traveled to East London on Friday to face the Border Bulldogs in their second Vodacom Cup match at the BCM Stadium.
The Kings can feel satisfied with the outcome as they scored two tries in each half to secure a 27 - 17 bonus point win.
Kings flyhalf, Gary van Aswegen opened the scoring for the visitors as he kicked a penaltly in the opening minutes to take a 3 - 0 lead after just three minutes.
Kings flank, Paul Schoeman scored their first try ten minutes later, after Border were reduced to fourteen men when Wandile Putuma received a yellow card. Van Aswegen was unsuccessful with the conversion as they took an 8 - 0 lead after fifteen minutes.
Ten minutes later the Kings were in for their second try, this time through prop Simon Kerrod. Kings extended their lead to 15 - 0 after a successful conversion from van Aswegen.
Border's flyhalf, Masixole Banda kicked a penalty just before half time to take the score to 15 - 3 at the break.
The Kings scored a further two tries in the second half, including a hat-trick from Schoeman and their bonus point fourth try in the sixty sixth minute.
Schoeman scored his second and the Kings' third try ten minutes into the second half. Van Aswegen failed to add the extras as they took a seventeen point lead, 20 - 3.
Border's Ntando Kebe scored his team's first try at the end of the third quarter, Banda converted as they trailed 10 - 20 with twenty minutes to play.
Schoeman scored his third and Kings' fourth try in the sixty sixth minute, Scott van Breda added the extras as the Kings took a seventeen point lead with fifteen minutes to play.
Border's Sipho Nofemele scored a consolation try for his team as the game reached the final stages. Olivier Zono converted the try to take the score to 27 - 17 in the seventy sixth minute.
Zono had an opportunity to give his team a losing bonus point, but failed to kick the three points on offer as the game ended 27 - 17 in favour of the Kings.

Shane Gates warns not to underestimate Border
Eastern Province captain, Shane Gates warned that his team must not underestimate the Border Bulldogs in their second Vodacom Cup match when they travel to East London for Friday night's match.
"We know that we must never underestimate Border, and we need to be much more clinical because they will feed off our mistakes,” Gates said.
“We know to improve we have to focus on what we do well and we have received positive feedback from the coaches this week.”
The Bulldogs suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of the Sharks XV last week and head coach, Mzwandile Stick acknowledged the threat Border posed and said the home side would have a point to prove against the Kings.
“We know what to expect from Border and they will come hard at us because they will want to prove a point in this derby,” Stick said.
“We were disappointed with our loss against Griquas, but we know we are better than that.
“We have put that match behind us and now we want to pick up the intensity and get our game back to a level where we know we belong.
“We know we need to finish things better and we are working on that because we firmly believe we have the capability to do better.”
Kick-off is at 7:10pm.
Disappointing end to Madibaz Varsity Cup campaign
The FNB NMMU-Madibaz exited the FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International after going down 40-8 against log leaders FNB Tuks in the final round-robin fixture at the NMMU Madibaz Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Monday night.
Madibaz head coach David Maidza said the focus of the season was for the young squad tolearn and grow.
“I went into the Varsity Cup with the belief that it would take a few games for us to really come together as a team.
“As the tournament wore on, I realised that we lacked a couple of things that we needed to work and improve on.”
He said that, as a young squad, they had understandably been slightly behind some of the other more established teams in technical and tactical terms.
“We learned a lot of good lessons from this tournament that we can implement going forward,”said Maidza.
With a number of the Madibaz’s senior players graduating, Maidza said he and the othercoaches were forced to take a long-term look at the team’s growth.
“I think we’ve done the right thing in investing in the youngsters.”
He said they were still dreaming of lifting the cup one day and will once again be pushing hard from next season.
“I think the structures that we’ve put in place bode well for NMMU’s future as long as the students keep on putting in the hard yards.
“I’m excited about the future and hopefully we can retain the nucleus of this team for next year’s campaign.”
The Madibaz are set to participate in the Eastern Province Grand Challenge club competition, which starts in April.
“It is an opportunity for us to start building again and we are just hoping that we can put our structures in place to really use the campaign to our advantage ahead of next year’s Varsity Cup.”
