Building towards Super Rugby

The Southern Kings have started to announce some of their new signings for the upcoming Super Rugby season that kicks off at the end of February.

Having lost a number of senior players to overseas clubs and other South African provinces, the Kings had to go yet again on the hunt to sign available players to join their franchise for the new Super Rugby season.

Kings management announced earlier this week that they have signed former Lions and Montpellier prop Schalk van der Merwe. The 25 year old, who will be on the bench for the Baa-Baas against the Springboks this weekend, will join the Southern Kings after his time with the Barbarians.

Along with van der Merwe, the Kings have also confirmed the availability of two loan players from the Cell C Sharks in Wandile Mjekevu and Neil Maritz. Mjekevu made a few appearances for the Kings towards the end of their 2016 campaign.

It was also confirmed that Chris Heiberg, Irne Herbst, Wandile Putuma, Garrick Mattheus, Yaw Penxe and Sintu Manjezi have joined the squad.

Heiberg has made 23 appearances, mainly off the bench, for the Australian Super Rugby franchise the Force over the last three seasons.

Herbst who was part of the 2013 Springbok IRB Junior World Championship team, who finished third after their semi-final defeat to Wales, made his senior debut for the Bulls in the 2016 Currie Cup qualifiers.

Both Putuma and Penxe have played most of their rugby at Border and have come through the junior ranks.

Mattheus, who was part of the Eastern Province Kings team who won the 2015 Under-19 Provincial Championship, made his senior debut for the EP Kings in the Currie Cup qualifiers. He scored a total of 66 points in his eight appearances.

Manjezi has come through the ranks, having represented Eastern Province from U16 level. He made his senior debut for the EP Kings in this year’s Currie Cup qualifiers.

There are also two new additions to the coaching staff in Vuyo Zangqa and David Williams.

The former Blitzbok, Zangqa will be in charge of the backs with Williams as the new attack and skills coach.

Williams previously worked as assistant coach with the Kobelco Steelers in Japan, academy coach at Bath in England, coaching consultant at SACS in Cape Town, and coaching coordinator and academy coach at London Irish in England.

The Southern Kings will face the Jaguares in their first match on the 25th of February at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth.
