Tough start for Southern Kings

The Southern Kings had their first taste of Northern Hemisphere rugby when they faced Scarlets at the Parc y Scarlets Stadium in Llanelli this past Saturday.

The defending Pro12 champions struggled to find their rhythm for most of the first half, but managed to secure a five point lead at the break, 15 - 10.

Kings' right wing, Yaw Penxe made history when he scored their first Guinness Pro14 try after a well timed cross-kick from flyhalf Kurt Coleman. Coleman also converted the try as the Kings took a 5 - 7 lead after twelve minutes.

Newly recruited Leigh Halfpenny converted his own try ten minutes later to put his team back in the lead, 12 - 7.

Coleman narrowed the gap by two points with a few minutes remaining in the half, but it was Halfpenny who kicked a penalty on the stroke of half-time to give his team a five point lead, 15 - 10.

As in the first half, the Kings had their fair share of opportunities, but failed to convert them into points as the home side scored 42 unanswered points in the second half to get their campaign off to a bonus point win.

The Kings' next match will be against Irish club, Connacht, who narrowly lost 12 - 18 to Scottish club Glasgow Warriors.
