The Vodacom Blue Bulls scored three first half tries and a further two more in the second half to beat the Eastern Province Kings in their first Currie Cup warm-up match at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Friday night.
The Kings struggled to get any rhythm as they could only manage a single penalty in the first half.
It was pretty much the same for the Kings in the second half as the Bulls gained confidence and scored a further two more tries.
The Kings took an early 3 - 0 lead through a Scott van Breda penalty in the third minute.
The Bulls were defending for most of the opening minutes, but their breakthrough came in the twenty eight minute when Arno Botha crossed the line for their first try. Tian Schoeman converted as they took a 7 - 3 lead.
Right wing Travis Ismaiel scored the Bulls' second try from a poor twenty two meter drop out, to cross the line in the right hand corner. Schoeman was on target as he extended their lead to 14 - 3.
Bulls flyhalf Tian Schoeman scored and converted his team's third try as poor defence allowed him to score an easy try under the post as time ran out in the first half.
The Bulls took a comfortable 21 - 3 lead into the half time break.
More poor handling from the Kings summed up the first twenty minutes of the second half as over eagerness cost them inside the Bulls half.
Dries Swanepoel scored their fourth try as the game reached the final quarter, Schoeman added his fourth successive conversion as they stretched their lead to 28 - 3.
Replacement flank Roelof Smit scored their fifth and final try from a powerful driving maul ten meters out. Schoeman missed the touchline conversion, but the Bulls had already hit the nails in the Kings coffin at 33 - 3 with still fifteen minutes to play.
The Kings did score a consolation try in the seventieth minute from a sneaky show-and- go from replacement scrumhalf Enrico Acker. Van Breda added the points on offer to bring the final score to 10 - 33 in favour of the visiting Bulls.
EP Kings Head Coach, Brent Janse Van Rensburg said after the game the scoreline was not what they expected, and it's not a true reflection of the game. He said the Bulls were more clinical and feel the Kings did not make use of their opportunities, often forcing too many passes.
He feels their is potential and is happy with that. He will be looking for consistency from the players and they will need to earn their jerseys.
