PE Police misfired in second half

Don's Pawnshop PE Police travelled to Pretoria this week for their Round 2 Gold Cup match against Pretoria Police at Loftus Versfeld on Friday afternoon.

The men from Port Elizabeth had a solid first half as they scored two tries to take a seven point lead, 17 - 10, at the break.

PE Police's Kyle Scott put the visitors in the lead after an early penalty kick went begging by Ruan Allerston. Allerston converted the try as they took a seven point lead after ten minutes.

Pretoria Police leveled the score with a try through outside centre Theunis Kruger, Laubscher converted to level the score at the start of the second quarter.

Allerston and Laubscher exchanged penalties before PE Polices' captain Alwyn Jordaan crossed the line on half time. Allerston added the extras to take a 17 - 10 half-time lead.

Despite the seven point lead from the visitors, the second half was one way traffic as Pretoria Police scored twenty three points before PE Police could add any points to the scoreboard.

Laubscher kicked an early penalty two minutes into the second half to trail by three, that was followed by a try through scrumhalf Hendrik van der Nest. Laubscher missed the conversion, but despite that they took a one point lead.

Pretoria Police extended their lead through a try from fullback Phumudzo Tshiovhe. Laubscher failed to convert, but they extended their lead to 23 - 17 as the match reached the final quarter.

Laubscher added another penalty before the reserve hooker, Martinus Hoffman, scored their bonuspoint try. Laubscher extended their lead to 33 - 17 after a successful conversion.

Replacement prop Matthew Moore scored a consolation try for the visitors as the match reached the final minute. Allerston added the extras to bring the score to 33 - 24.

There was, however, still time for openside flank Ian van Deventer to score their fifth try. Laubscher converted the try as the match ended 40 - 24 to give Pretoria Police their second consecutive win.

PE Police remains second on the log five points behind Pretoria Police and on point ahead of Belaz Sishen.
